Introduction about Watches

Tick, tock, tick, tock…

I am of course talking about time, measured in seconds, minutes, hours and even days, weeks, months, years, decades etc. People around the world are familiar with this concept thanks a now universally accepted method for telling the time and measuring it. Who needs sundials any more when you have clocks?

The world’s oldest clock lies in Comayagua, Honduras. It was made over 800 years ago by the Moors and donated to the town by King Phillip II of Spain.

And then there’s watches… technology has advanced far enough that just about all of us these days have these mini-clocks on our wrists (just remember to keep it powered! – Although the truth is that the batteries with most of them last for months, even years.

Watches continue to exist in analogue format (i.e. the normal 1-12 clock face) but you can also get digital clocks and watches – the ones where the numbers are represented by light bars, where if they say “07734” it says “hello” if you turn it upside down.

Watches consitute a big industry these days everywhere in the world. You can get popular brands from so many companies, among them Accurist, Calvin Klein, Casio, Citizen, DKNY, Diesel, Guess, LTD Watch, Nixon, Police, Rotary, Swatch, Timex and Tissot. And of course, lets not forget the famous really expensive ones, Rolexes; and fake Rolexes are popular in Thailand, apparently. Not that people are never happy with fake Rolexes, far from it. While Rolexes can cost several thousand pounds, you can purchase Casios from £15.

You can buy waterproof watches, as well, these days. I once had one that was resistant in water to a depth of up to 50m. This may sound surprising but there are waterproof watches available which have a metal casing.

And a lot of modern digital watches allow you to do more than just tell the time; for they come with a stopwatch function (including a lap-keeping facility for some of them) and / or an alarm function and / or a countdown option.

But I wonder how many people still wear watches these days when mobile phones are so common and a lot of them these days have clocks seemingly as standard issue.

Besides being able to choose watches of different materials, brands and colours, chances are that the watch you will pick will have an adjustable strap (even if it’s made of metal, a jeweller will be able to change the size of it, or replace it should it become broken). And some watches have themes – I once saw a Powerpuff Girls watch especially for kids. I wonder if Craig McCracken knows that there are Powerpuff Girls watches.
